About Our Chapter
Back Country Horsemen of Grays Harbor
Established in 1999, the Grays Harbor Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Washington is dedicated to keeping trails open for all users. We are one of 32 BCHW chapters across the state, working to preserve the American tradition of horseback riding on public lands.
Our Mission
The purpose of the Back Country Horsemen is to:
- Perpetuate the common-sense use and enjoyment of horses and mules in America’s back country and wilderness
- Work to ensure that public lands remain open to recreational stock use
- Assist the various government and private agencies in their maintenance and management of said resources
- Educate, encourage, and solicit active participation in the wise use of the back country resource by horsemen and the general public
- Foster and encourage the formation of new chapters and affiliations
What We Do
Trail Maintenance
Our members volunteer hundreds of hours each year maintaining trails on the Olympic National Forest. Our primary project is the West Fork of the Humptulips Trail #806, where we have maintained a Volunteer Agreement with the Pacific Ranger District since 2008.
Education
We promote Leave No Trace practices and responsible back country use. Members can access training through BCHW including sawyer certification, packing clinics, and wilderness first aid.
Advocacy
We work at the local, state, and national level to protect equestrian access to public lands. Through BCHW and BCHA, we have a voice in land management decisions that affect trail riders.
